Stability of Balance under Rules of Foul Point vs. No Foul Point

(I) The initiative is the key to unbalance

In the games of Chinese checkers and animal chess, the strategies and tactics for both parties are exactly the same. However, it has already been proved that the party who plays first has the game in his/her hands.

In high-standard games of Chinese chess, the red party, which plays first, loses out to the black party in a drawn game. In the game of ‘go’, the rule of 3-4 point compensation limits the advantage of the black party who goes first.

Strictly speaking, it is difficult to define ‘the initiative’ accurately. Generally, it means a move which must be answered. It is like a conductor leading a band. The party who goes first in the above four games has the initiative at the beginning. If the player takes the advantage of the initiative well, the balance of the game inclines towards the first-go party. Otherwise, the sequence of the game does not affect the balance of games, including animal chess and Chinese checkers.

(II) Two modes of balance: foul point vs. no foul point

It is a nice article but the problem is that it does not have any analyzes to back up what Wu Di and Dai Xiaohan are trying to say. Actually, even in gomoku/wujin there are also balanced openings, sure-draw openings etc. You should try to analyze any kind of corner opening and see how hard it is to find the best moves there since there are so many possible variants.
