The Sichuan earthquake （2008-05-15 15:00:43）
On Monday there was a terrible earthquake inSichuan, China, with the magnitude of 7.9. As I am watching the TV newsupdates on damages and casualties, I feel so sad. This monsterearthquake literally wiped out some small towns in the area so thatthere are almost no buildings left. In some areas, over 75% of thepopulation died.

I am feeling so painful while seeing these news, I do not know howmany people survived. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that happened inTaiwan several years ago is nothing compared to this one. Thedifference of this 0.6 in Richter's scale is so gigantic! It is a hyperfast growing logarithmic scale, not linear. It means, the energy ofthis earthquake was 10 times bigger than 9/21 Taiwan earthquake. Mostpeople can never even imagine it. The magnitude 7.9 equals to theexplosion energy of 600 000 000 tons of TNT explosives.

I have experienced 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Taipei before, butthis is so tiny compared to what happened in Sichuan! With 5.5 usuallynobody gets hurt and no buildings collapse nor get any seriousstructural damage, unless there were serious construction mistakes.Only the high buildings shake slowly (two waves per second or so),feels like the ferry making a turn in a stormy sea, making the wholeship vibrate for a while.

I really really hope that there will be more survivers this time! Ialso hope our renju friends in China are all safe! My biggestcondolences to the relatives and friends of the victims! May you allhave the strength to overcome this disaster! The world is watching and supporting you!

我曾经在台北经历过5.5级地震，那跟四川地震比就是小巫见大巫。一般5.5级地震不会造成人员伤亡，建筑倒塌，也不会有严重的结构损伤，除非是豆腐渣工程。只会导致高楼慢慢地振动（每秒两回合左右），就像在波涛汹涌的大海里转湾的船，摇摆一会儿。
我真的非常希望这次地震有尽量多的幸存者。也希望中国的所有五子棋棋友安全。我对遇难者的亲人和朋友表示最诚挚的问候（这句不会翻译，错了请回贴更正）。 你们要有勇气克服困难！全世界都在关注、支持着你们。
